The Thrift Trust

The East Kent Branch is fortunate in having a separate Welfare Fund called "The Thrift Trust", the Trustees being the Executive Committee of the East Kent Branch.

William Alexander THRIFT was a Metropolitan Police Pensioner and a member of the East Kent Branch of NARPO.
He was a regular supporter of the Branch and attended meetings and reunions.

At the time of his death in 1980 Mr THRIFT was a widower and his nearest relative was a niece of his wife.
Unknown to the Branch he willed one third of his estate to the then Police Convalescent Home at Hove (now relocated to Goring-on-Thames and called "Flint House").
A further third he endowed to the Chief Constable of Kent for the benefit of
the Canterbury Police Pensioners. Following legal advice and disclaimers of
the surviving pensioners of the Canterbury City Force, the Chief Constable
agreed to allow the Committee of the East Kent Branch of NARPO to use the
endowment for welfare purposes, and make suitable rules for the management
of the assets. The East Kent Branch Committee named the assets the 'William
Thrift Fund'. The Fund has since been renamed "The Thrift Trust". The arrangements were conditional upon the Chief Constable being provided with a report of the management of the fund and a copy of the accounts each year.

A statement of Purpose and Rules were formulated, including the appointment of the East Kent Branch Executive Committee of NARPO, as Trustees.

OBJECTS OF THE FUND
"To provide financial or material assistance by grants, loans, or the purchase of equipment or items of welfare for members of the East Kent Branch of NARPO and to ensure an increase in the capital value of the Fund to provide future benefits".

Donations
All donations will be acknowledged. Cheques should be made payable to The William Thrift Trust and forwarded to the Treasurer.

Applications for assistance
These should be made to your local committee member, in confidence, who will assist you with your application, or to the Secretary.

Copies of the audited accounts are circulated to members annually in February.
The Thrift Trust AGM is held following the branch AGM. See Diary Dates
